I liked "He could tell if I was having a good day or a bad day. He was always trying to get me to laugh if he thought I was having a bad day. He was very in tune to human feelings," Ms Cobb said.

I would say Cheetah was the best actor in those movies - a great comedian - ok Maureen O'Sullivan tolerated all the hokum well.

I actaully saw Johnny Weissmuller at Empress Hall London. Dived into a small pool from a very high board and also filled the place with the famous Tarzan call.....

Ah they were fun movies.

I like to read news etc via RSS Feeds. RSS was rumoured to be on way out BUT still seems to be healthy.....

I used to use Bloglines then they dropped off.... So I switched to Google Reader but alas this month they changed the layout to something they implied was simple - BUT its ghastly absolutely useless for quick eyeball scan of Headlines etc.

So I went looking - Wanted features - able to read import the google reader subscription list - clearly highlights the Unread sites (I don't want to see all my subs listed) and work through them - and finally a quick for each sub as I scan "Mark All Read " ---- PLUS LOOKS GOOD

sites recommended various tools
and I tried these four
BlogExpress
SharpReader
Awasu
OmeaReader
All handled the Import of sub list and mostly looked ok
But they usually failed on the Mark All Read button and the Only the Unread.....

The Winner was
FeedDemon - Free Windows RSS Reader

handled everything I wanted and looks good - even handles Facebook notifiers
but alas not Twitter - looks like it used but Twitter changed and stopped it working

Ron's Christmas Wallop - a drink for Christmas
Ensure you have a clean bottle
Beat together
3 EGGS
1/2 tin of Condensed Milk - a good brand - it needs to be sweet
Add
1 Tablespoon of Coffee essence (yes the liquid with chicory - Camp Brand if avail)
plus
2 Tablespoons of Chocolate Topping
Beat again
add
3/4 cup of rum (whisky is you prefer it)
Beat Again
One carton of Fresh Cream (oh well its Christmas)
Beat 6 seconds - if too long will get very thick
Pour into bottle - should be enough left over for a taste
Put into fridge - this is a way of making cream last longer

I have been known to use one cup of rum which sure gives enough for a taste.
After all you need the Rum to keep the cream and eggs.
Very nice on ice and with milk

not inexpensive -In Sydney we can buy Bushells which is very similar.
I suppose if the bottle stuff not available - you could make some very strong coffee and include in the mix

But to me Ken is the man who wonderful films at the BBC during the 1960s about classical composers

As Wiki says

I agree with Ken about the Delius film it was a joy. The music was so lyrical and the unselfish work that Eric Fenby did for Delius was wonderful.....
And then the fun Percy Grainger arrives to his bouncy English Country Garden music and charges up, throws a tennis ball over the house and runs through the corridor to catch ball the other side....

And poor Isidora Duncan who driving in an open car managed to get her long trailing scarf around the back wheels and ...........

Elgar cycling over the hills with all his wonderful music the thought of it just brings the English countryside to life for me.........

When I was very young Edmundo was a big star in England - I remember his very infectious and very rhythmic music and always so happy........ and happy he must have been to live to over 100

When I was on cruise and touring Messina in Sicily, the guide told us William was actually Italian and from Messina.
First I had ever heard of that.........
Strangely I come back to Sydney and just appearing locally is Anonymous (film) -
The film is proposing that the plays were written by Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford.
The society that pushes him has some comments on the film Shakespeare-Oxford Society » Anonymous, The Movie
Quote "Of course Roland Emmerich and the screenwriter John Orloff took cinematic liberties with history in creating the film but that’s what storytellers do."
So even they say the film is not history!!!

Analysis says that Shakespear's works were all written by one person.
This discusses the claims for Francis Bacon, the 6th Earl of Derby, Christopher Marlowe, and the Earl of Oxford.
I understand that Oxford has replaced the other men as the main claimant.
Edward de Vere mentions some works that he wrote - I could not see any evidence that these have been analysed for similarities to Shakespear's works? De Vere died in 1604 and yet new Shakespear plays were being performed upto 1613. If Oxford had his actual own works published why would be shy about his Shakespear works? And he had his own group of players - why would he provide his Shakespear works to another group of players?
The claims for him seem to be based on his European tour and that he visited Italian places that Shakespear used in his plays. Nothing is known of Shakespear going outside England and so Oxford must have written these works. Hardly convincing - as he was around theatres perhaps Shakespear listened to his memories of these places or some other tourists.

I'll probably see Anonymous as it covers one of my favourite periods of English history and the graphics of London are said to be excellent but its ideas are nonsense.....

Ship docks almost in the town just a short walk and you are there. Tours to Olympia shown at 10 euros. But just another ruin. We just wanted a restful day. Plenty of lovely shops and a cute little museum for 2 euro of Greek inventions with working models which the lady demo'd - some very funny ....
Water front coffee shops saying free Wifi but I did not bring netbook with me. Ship left at 2pm

Corfu

Corfu - Noordam docks around 200m from port entrance - a free bus takes to entrance - then shuttle to Corfu town is $8usd - leaves you at entrance to old fort.. Just across the public park/square from town.
overcast and rain around but we missed actual downpour.
We went on the Achillon Palace tour. A lot of coaches and other ships also doing this. Just a short drive down the coast. Roads around the palace very narrow and cars had to back off for our coach. Coach parking also overloaded.
Our guide Anastasia had a lot of detail about the life of Empress Elizabeth of Austria. Sissi had a lot of personal tragedy. 2 girls died as infants. Her only son Rudolf committed suicide. Her palace is looking old and tired. It will be interesting to compare our 1965 photos. Sissi had the dying Achilles statue with arrow in his heel. The Kaiser took over the palace and replaced that statue with the Achilles with spear ....

After Palace to Kononi promontory for shots of Mouse island but overcast day..... I bought a panama hat for 10 euro s and Chris a pink hat for 6...

On to Corfu town and the sun came out. Anastasia left us at start of List Street .... in old days you had to be on the list to be allowed in the street. Everyone comes here for coffee... Anastasia would return at 140pm for trip back
We had Greek coffees and frappes and plate of meze - which was really excellent. All in 17.50 euros for 2
We were next to pick up point but guide never appeared so at 2pm we caught shuttle to ship.
Next free time - ask re what happens if guide vanishes???

Dubrovnik - lovely but very busy.
Just too many people - most off of cruise ships.
Nice boutique shops - kuna seemed to be around 7 to a euro... some shop prices seemed expensive.
They took euros.
We had an excellent coffee at old harbour - they charged in euros and it was a reasonable price...
Getting up to the top of wall looked steep and we thought it would be too exhausting.
Many of side streets had long flights of steps.
Walking around the centre of the town was fun.............
The churches were interesting but discouraged photography.

Noordam provided a shuttle each way for $7USD it was too far to walk... 2+km

Dear All (some first thoughts written on 2nmd day)
Well Roma was a bit messy but we enjoyed the time
there ... especially the food
Trip to Civitavecchia (Ci pronounced Chee) was
great - Merc van delivered us right to the wharf
Noordam very concerned about health - antiseptic
hand wash everywhere. for 2 days buffet is not
self serve...
So we had to answer a questions on paper re any
colds etc...........
On board fairly quickly
Noordam - luxurious
Food - wonderful - so varied and well cooked
Staff - excellent - friendly and helpful
Decor - very nice
Bed - very comfortable
Cabin - spacious
All that Irena said it would be ...........
Met folk that I had chatted with on internet at Crows
Nest bar with drinks provided by ship and an
officer spoke and said Santorini would be a
highlight and there would not be many ships in port... At the
time we were sailing through Messina Straits -
wonderful clear view of Italy and Sicily. Passed
by Stromboli volcano around 645am - plume of smoke

Shortly we are off on a Mediterranean Cruise. It started at a North Epping school fete. There was Irena with a table and cruise booklets.
Irena has kids in our grandkids classes. Irena operates from her home and comes to you......... Very helpful and has arranged our whole trip.
The flight with Emirates. Stopover and tours in Dubai. Then hotel and tours in Roma. And the train to Rome port. And of course the cruise itself.

Our friends agree about the help and recommended Irena to other folk and they were pleased also.......

BALVENIE Distillery - Google Maps

Fife Arms in Dufftown - Google Maps

I stayed there for a week in 1960 as a trainer Officer of Customs and Excise. Dufftown was then the most concentrated distillery town in the world. Six active and another used as a giant warehouse.

The distillery we were visiting to find out how the Excise controlled them was The BALVENIE.

We came by railway from Aberdeen and the station was just up the road from Balvenie and the road had been cleared of snow into the town. A nice brisk jaunt.

I remember the local officer's wife cooked some potato scone things just right for the freezing cold......

And the Malt whisky was great

I am starting a new category Hero - people who have been a major impact on my life.
In my life sense I am here today because of Dr Trevor Currer.

In 2006 he removed a hernia and my gall bladder which was so bad I could have been stricken when I went to Tanna in Vanuatu at end of 2006.
Such a problem in Vanuatu would have been very serious.
And now this month emergency surgery on my stomach. He was wonderful a very comforting bedside manner but says the facts. I was talking to my GP and he was arranging tests. Then we were baby sitting and Christine was around the kids place and I was home with the car when this pain struck. All I could do was ring for an ambulance and off to SAH we went. Trevor came in and diagnosed a burst ulcer. I never knew I had an ulcer. And so major surgery. I was in hospital for 12 days and rest after that......

He came to Australia from Cape Town in 1994 - we are most blessed to have him

A very high recommendation for an Istanbul Hotel from a friend who had a coach tour of Turkey in August 2011.
Let me tell you they had severe food poisoning elsewhere from help your self buffet. So must have been outstanding service that caused Jill to be so pleased with this hotel.

The Turkish are an amazing race of people and in Istanbul they did speak enough English for us to get by very, very well.

Also, I mentioned the wonderful 'birthday treat' the people at the Neorion gave me. Which included large cake and even a lovely gift .....
I'm not sure of the restaurant we went to on the rooftop of hotel just around another corner and which had a connection to our hotel, I have asked our friends to forward the name, if they cannot remember I'll email the Neorion as also want to thank them for the birthday treat.

We had a drink at a cafe/bar just around the corner, it was called 'Home Made', the address is complicated as has those little curly things, would be best for people to look up the web site www.homemadeistanbul.com

the people at the bar were amazing, we sat in a huge open window 1 metre from the tram line and trams full of commuters whizzing by, what an experience. Our friends whom we were meeting that night for dinner were walking by on the other side of the road, we called out to them and they came and chatted through the huge open window. The proprietor called them in and said, please sit with your friends and have complimentary apple tea, which is very much served everywhere, like warm apple juice. Then after we finished our drink and our friends had gone they gave us complimentary apple tea.

Holland America Noordam schedule is arrive Kusadasi 11 October 7am and leave 7pm I understand they normally are on time. HAL own tours - one starts at 745am and then two at 8am and then others at later time.

Ephesus is a place we've wanted to visit for a long time....

Many people will be doing shipping company tours but friends there in mid 2011 heard many complaints from those who did.
Their tours there did not seem to be as good as at other ports......

Some people recommended this company Ephesus Tours, Private Ephesus tours and Ephesus excursions in Kusadasi

Our day in Ephesus organised with Liman Hotel - friends did a tour with the hotel this year and highly recommended Hasan... Plus when having a coffee you can use the free WiFi

Liman Hotel -is just outside the gates of the harbour. I could see it in a photo from deck of the ship.(no not this photo)... We just have to set time with Hasan for driver to be there at exit with my name on a placard - perhaps 8 need to get to Ephesus before the crowds although October should be a bit less....

If you have organised with me for this of course we need to touch base on ship and have cash ready for the day. Note it is Euros but have the cash before we get there as Turkey has its own currency so an ATM will not issue Euros. And a little bit extra as presumably we have a driver and a guide....

Eight of us at moment - perhaps 8am and finish towards 5 - back in Kusadasi there is a market and perhaps a carpet factory to visit...

So as things are I've set seeing what Hasan says are the "importand" sites
and including at 10 euros extra the Terrace Houses for a total of 75 euros each

We can be flexible on the day except I think Hasan wants around 8 hours or so.... But he said he is flexible
so if we find time at end of the Ephesus events we may add The Cave of the Seven Sleepers.
And I would like to go on to Sirince Village which will be for extra 5 euros.

8 people should be Mercedes-Benz Vito (2011)

now if we get to more than 10 people price comes down 10 euros and would be in a Mercedes-Benz - Sprinter

Carbon Tax

Sunday was the day when the PM told us what she planned - of course we'd heard it from the Greens already.
Then Monday was Q&A and a good reception for the PM - and several Tweets saying how wonderful she had been. She was All absolute spin proposing that Her Tax will fix the problem. All a Tax does is "encourage" people to do something - providing there is something to do. Has high tobacco tax stopped people smoking?

PM quote - by 2050 we will achieve reductions equivalent to taking 45,000,000 cars off the road. She mentioned we have 12,000,000 cars at moment and she is not taxing them because that would cause harm to families. And of course cost her votes. But the 45 million quote makes me think she sees cars as a major problem. So why nothing about moving to electric cars etc??????

One young person on a web question asked would we have 100% renewable energy sources by end of decade. She had to say well around 40%.

So lets get it clear the tax is to get people off carbon but there isn't anything really in her plan that creates energy in non carbon ways. So what we have is just a TAX not really direct action on alternatives.

Yes under the tax I could receive benefit providing the treasury costings are sound.

Back in days when I followed Boxing - well my father had fought in the Marines and he liked to watch - back then Henry was a hero.
I can remember listening on car radio to an excited moment for commentator Barrington Dalby in the 1963 fight with Cassius Clay when Henry put him down.
I just didn't believe it. And of course Cassius picked himself up and stopped playing around BUT Henry did put him down in spite of all that brilliant foot work and shadow boxing etc Henry got through.
Sadly Henry was easily cut on the face and his career was doomed but he was a nice guy and I remember him well.

Moghlai Chicken Curry

Moghlai Chicken Curry
A wonderful curry so creamy and tasty.
The poppy seeds add this lovely surprise.
We make in batches and freeze portions.

2 kg (4 Ib) chicken .pieces

1/2 cup (125 g) butter
1 tablespoon paprika
3 onions, chopped
2 cups (500 ml) coconut milk
3 cloves garlic
3 bay leaves
1 cup (250 g) yoghurt
1 teaspoon powdered cinnamon
2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
5 whole cloves
2 tablespoons poppy seeds
1 1/4 cups (300 ml) cream
2 Tomatoes, quartered
1/4 teaspoon saffron
1 1/2 tablespoons salt
3 tablespoons lemon or lime Juice
2-3 tablespoons curry powder

1. Melt the butter in a large saucepan and saute the onions and garlic until
golden brown.

2. Stir in the bay leaves, cinnamon and cloves and simmer for five minutes.

3. Add the chicken and cook for ten minutes.

4. Stir in the tomatoes, salt, curry powder, paprika, coconut milk, yoghurt,
ginger and poppy seeds. Cover and cook over a low heat until chicken'is
tender.

5. Stir in the cream, saffron and lemon or lime juice and heat thoroughly.

Serves 6.

Strange coincidence Geoffrey Rush film of Peter Sellers "Life and Death" was on TV last night and of course Blake was shown having great fun as well as strain working with Peter.
But what wonderful films they made. Such memorable moments. Peter spinning the big office globe of the world and crashing to the floor. The word games in French. Ah Blake knew how to get Peter performing.

And of course "Breakfast at Tiffany's" what an icon that has become.

And I just found out this
Edwards began his career as a scriptwriter for radio. In fact, one of his early breaks was writing dialogue for Orson Welles’ famous 1938 production of War of the Worlds.
Now that was major - that Radio show was so authentic that is caused panic as people thought the Martians were coming. Orson and Blake's great success.

Tangy Lemon Cake

Christine's recipe for Lemon Cake
3 large Lemons - now we are talking Tangy
1 cup butter / marg
1 cup sugar + 3 tablespoons of sugar for juice
1 + 1/2 cups white self raising flour and sift it
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs
pinch of salt
some cornflour
spray oil for cake tray

Grate rind from both lemons - and put juice aside.
Cream Butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add grated rind to cream mixture.
Add both eggs - one at a time and mix well.
Mix in sifted flour and milk.
Alternately starting and ending with flour.
Spray cake tray with oil and then dust with cornflour.
You could place baking paper in bottom - if you like perhaps not.
Pre Heat oven and Bake at 200c for around 30 minutes
test with skewer to see if cooked

Take juice from lemons boil with 3 tablespoons of sugar.
Loosen cake in tin first and then
Pour hot mixture over cake whilst still hot

Dhal

1 tablespoon oil

6 oz. (3/4 cup) red lentils, soaked for 30 minutes and drained

1 onion, finely chopped

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 pint (2 1/2 cups) stock

l/2 teaspoon ground turmeric

sea salt

1 teaspoon ground coriander

freshly ground black pepper

1 teaspoon curry powder

Heat the oil in a pan and fry the onion until soft. Stir in the garlic, turmeric, coriander and curry powder and cook for a further 2 minutes over a low heat.

Add the lentils, stock and seasoning, cover and cook gently for 50-60 minutes until the lentils are quite soft.

Dhal should be the consistency of a very thick pea soup. Adjust the seasoning and serve with a curry.

In India often served thinner and more like a gravy BUT we like this one

Yes indeed a harrowing book. A history of Iran in the 20th century told through scenes from Ali's grandparent's lives. Rather like a novel but does show us the trauma of Iran. Salman is a police lieutenant and is excited by the Shah's attempt to modernise Iran. Part of which involves banning the Barqa and there is a scene when Salman confronts a woman who really wants to wear the thing. He realises banning is not the answer. Eventually he realises the Shah is a dicator and helps depose him. Suffers prison under the new Shah.
If you want to know why Iran is the way it is then do read this beautifully written book

The imperial cruise : a true story of empire and war / by James Bradley

I picked the book up thinking it was about the World Cruise of the Royal Navy in 1923 which took my father to many countries. But it is about the 1905 diplomacy voyage on which Teddy Roosevelt sent his daughter Alice and the Secertary of War Taft to the far east.

James Bradley (author) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia also wrote Flags of our Fathers which covered WW2 and I have seen the Clint Eastwood film. James is very concerned about the impact on his father's generation of WW2 and in this new book
he lays the blame on Teddy Roosevelt and his encouragement of Japan in 1905.

The Imperial Cruise by James Bradley - Reviews, Discussion, Bookclubs, Lists ( star ratings) for some good comments on the book.

Yes its PC history BUT a lot of what he says seem justified. It is not just a history of 1905 he goes back to the Mexican War and 1853 Perry threat to Japan. His point is a racism in American policy and because the Japanese decided to become industrialised and started wearing western suits including top hats that USA was convinced they were above the other Asian countries. Then LeGendre advised Japan to take over Okinawa and Taiwen and Korea. Bradley seems to say that all was peace in Asia before the USA intervened - he does not mention the invasions of Korea by Japan in the 1590s.

The whole push of the book is that Roosevelt conducted secret and illegal agreements with Japan. He seems to imply he has seen confirmation of this and yet we are also told that Roosevelt continually wanted assuances that Japan would not attack the Phillipines. The book also goes into the horrible mess of USA involvement in the Phillipines.

It seems that Teddy Roosevelt was not altogether as wise he he appeared in Ron's "reviews": David Fromkin’s new book: The King and the Cowboy when he was dealing with the Kaiser and King Edward in Europe.

Bradley's book is very readable history. And you can follow the romance of Alice Roosevelt. All comes to a rather sad end.

"The Nielsen poll, published in Fairfax newspapers on Monday, shows federal Labor leading the coalition 52 to 48 per cent on a two-party preferred basis."

I did an on line SMH survey that had a question that went something like

"Do you agree with Gillard's strong Timor Policy - Yes - No - Don't Know"

How do you answer a question like that? Do I think its strong - Do I like the policy - Is Timor the right place - Do I approve of Gillard?
What does it mean? How would a pollster use the data?
I answered NO - mainly to avoid a positive on Gillard but how would others see it
The Nauru centre seemed to work BUT
Timor seems a bad place - it is a sensitive place - severe trouble there in recent times - many locals don't like the idea.
And Gillard handling of it was appalling

Back in Poll land I heard on ABC radio a pollster reporting a strong poll saying Timor was a good idea BUT a negative on how Gillard handled it. Is that support for Gillard - no I don't think it is.

Those numbers have been static for over an hour

The tax has been given a new name - the Minerals Resource Rent Tax (MRRT). It was previously known as the Resource Super Profit Tax.

The headline tax of 40 per cent has been reduced to 30 per cent, despite the federal government's previous refusals to back down on the rate. The reforms will be limited to iron ore and coal projects, and will only apply to 320 companies.
The government says the reduced rate will make the industry "internationally competitive".

Petroleum resource tax extended
The MRRT will apply to iron ore and coal. However, the current Petroleum Resource Rent Tax will be extended to cover all onshore and offshore oil and gas projects. There will be no rebate for new exploration costs.
To finance the changes, the company tax rate will now only drop to 29 per cent, instead of the promised 28 per cent.

The federal government estimates the reforms will reduce revenue by $1.5 billion in the forward estimates.

Barrie Cassidy on ABC put it well "The King is dead, Long life the Queen".
Gough would have said "Well of course Julia is the feminine version of Julius". Hang on it was Julius that was stabbed.

I find it deeply disturbing that a Prime Minister was deposed in his first term simply because someone else wanted the job. Especially when the PM had turned his party's fortunes round and won in a landslide even losing the previous PM his seat. It was Kevin 07 - have you ALP folk forgot that? Kevin then contained with enormous popularity in the polls until just recently. Strange the big problem for John Howard was the advertising campaign against him over work choices and the problem for Kevin was one against him over the Mining Tax. I actually thought the tax was a real socialist issue. Surprising the ALP want out.

The Union person on lifeline had me chortling - it was Kevin asking his chief staff to find out opinions that caused them all to say time. Really its clear you all had already decided. Shorten on Q&A was saying it was Wednesday when he advised Julia to challenge. I though she said she made her own mind up! Shorten also said "it was a hard decision" - really should I feel sorry for you. What about the man you dumped. Surely he should have been allowed to go an election.

Mark Latham really did a bucket job on the party. And strange that he said that Swan hates Gillard as I see him arrive at G20 and announce himself as "Wayne Swan Prime Minister of Australia sorry deputy....."

Well it wouldn't have fooled us Julia - it is fairly obvious you do not believe in God. Are you saying Kevin was pretending? The last time I voted ALP was for Bob Hawke - then unlike Julia I decided God was for real and realised the ALP didn't see things that way.
Anyhow I was in India trying to serve God and came back to Australia to find that Keating thought he knew better than the people. And just under 20 years later Gillard does the same thing. Yes our first female PM but winning an election was the way that should have been not his "I decided"

Only last week Maxine was talking in local paper about a Rudd government plan. And her bulletin came and was full of photos with Kevin. Sad.
So will Maxine be a one term member for Bennelong?

David Fromkin's new book: The King and the Cowboy

"The King and the Cowboy: Theodore Roosevelt and Edward the Seventh: The Secret Partners".

Actually I think it should be "The King, the Cowboy and Autocrat" or whatever you want to call Kaiser Willie.
The book suggests that the King and the President colluded to stop the Kaiser's plans in the Moroccan crisis of 1905 and this set the stage for WW1 and hence WW2 etc.

It is very well written history and short as well so well worth reading to understand what happened in Europe at the transition from Queen Victoria into the 20th century. Goes into how Victoria and Albert tried to educate Edward and that Victoria may well have hated him. Similarly explores the strange upbringing of Willie and his personality problems. Willie was actually visiting his grandmother when she died and he loved British uniforms etc. And yet he set out to oppose Britain - even though many protest that his expansion of the German Navy was not to oppose Britain.

From this book a case is well established that Edward had much more say in policy than the subsequent Kings of England.

And then My Family which I only started watching when it had been around some time - some episodes were really funny but always a sad undercurrent. This book is about his first sixty years and is a very enjoyable read. He really goes into his acting style. It seems he likes to play the part and also play to the audience. Which can be threatening and one actor actually punched him.

Playing Henry II with Derek Jacobi as Beckett - he relates Derek as being a bit grumpy when Robert tried to be amusing - later he recounts Derek had Mrs Thatcher as a dinner guest and she invited Robert which he refused as being from the working class he did not like her politics - no wonder Derek was grumpy. Robert does reveal a lot about himself. Always having a laugh about himself. It was good to read about his career. Being "down under" for 40 years means I've lost touch with "new" actors etc in UK so this book was revealing.

I knew "Me and My girl" the 1930/40s Lupino Lane musical with the "Lambeth Walk" had had a rerun but I just did not know that Robert with Emma Thompson had been the stars - he took the show to a success on Broadway and met everyone including Miss Hepburn.

I'll be watching more of Robert if his shows get down here

Now there are more interviews etc on The Days of Noah - Apocalypse

most of these are trying to refute what Randall Price said and say he was not there when they made their discovery and has not been near it. I could not see any video of the discovery. Some pics of the interior - one an enormous space.
They also seem to say this was same site that has been found before 1883, 1948 etc. There must be TWO such sites because one appears to be in an ice bound area and the other I have seen in TV shows is not.

I first came across Dick's thrillers in the 1970s and I had to read them being a race horse owner myself back then. Always horses around the books somewhere - always told in first person (it makes you feel so involved). And always the hero (ie Dick as it was in first person) was captured by the villain and often tortured. You felt that Dick had met someone with an interesting trade at a dinner party as his "hero" was very often in some strange business. Such as the restaurant owner/chef and the clients poisoned by the villain with insufficently cooked beans - details see Red Kidney Bean Poisoning. The poor hero nearly lossed everything as it looked like his fault - often a plot in Dick's books. Details like that always made the books exciting.

And the strange thing is that Christine grabbed one of horse racing thrillers for a read and she became hooked too. We recently read one that Dick wrote with his son Felix and I heard Felix will continue the good work.

Well per this article 25 April 1446 BC
which is good as around the date usually determined directly from Bible chronology

Most people would say that Pharaoh died in the Red Sea when the seas covered the Egyptian army. The article presents that he did not. Which of course also applies if Exodus was under Ramses II (seems to be the main conventional candidate)

Interesting contention that Hatshepsut was the Princess who was Moses step mother and that after Exodus Amenhotep II tried to destroy her memorials rather than it being Thutmose III.

A major point is made on Amenhotep only having two campaigns north - the second being after the loss of his army in the Red Sea. He did it to show that Egyptian power was not destroyed and also to obtain slaves. Then he signed a peace treaty with Mitanni. Presumably with a small force he had managed to acquire slaves but not a major campaign against Mitanni.

Interesting and is a well argued approach and does place Exodus at what I think is a good date

Then there is David Rohl's approach which does place Exodus at a similar date but under Dudimose. Rohl's New Chronology places Pharoah at different dates compared to the Conventional dates

Peanut Biscuits (remember tell people in case if allergy)

1/4 lb butter
1 cup s/r flour
half cup chopped peanuts
3/4 cup brown sugar
mix dry ingredients
melt butter mix all together
place in a flat tray & cut when you take out the oven. Leave in tray to
harden.
Cook in a moderate oven until light golden brown, a little darker than
when raw.

Impossible Pie
3 eggs
1 cup milk
half cup s/r flour
1/4 cup melted butter.
Mix with fork and pour into pie dish.
dice any of the following -
bacon, mushrooms,salami, fish or salmon, corn, tomato etc,. throw into
pie dish. sprinkle 1 cup grated cheese on top. bake in moderately hot
oven till cooked.

Sour Cream Cake
6 oz melted & cooled butter.
1 1/2 cups s/r flour
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
3 eggs
mix with spoon
300 mls sour cream
dob sour cream on top
place in lined tin 160 Celsius 1 hour.
sprinkle with icing sugar
Also nice in winter served hot as a dessert or cooled as cake.

Only last week I saw Kathleen Byron who played the "mad" nun in a Midsomer Murders of course she did it - Kathleen died January 2009

and a minor role Caesar and Cleopatra (1945) but a film of light and colour too - was it then she met Stewart Granger whom she married in 1950

Hamlet (1948) Ophelia to Laurence Olivier - ah what a dark brooding story

and of course The Robe (1953) and Spartacus (1960)

a film I always like for whimsical humour The Grass Is Greener (1960) and with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr who of course was the star of Black Narcissus

This with Dirk Bogarde where her brother and his hotel room disappear So Long at the Fair (1950)

Richard was one of my favourite actors from way back. I remember his touching performance in "The Hasty Heart", a sad but warm film. He was so good. In most of his films he was an action man. Of course Guy Gibson in "the Dam Busters".

And so many other roles - Robin Hood and Rob Roy were him at his dashing best.
The Telegraph article is a good tribute and the comments also.
They mention how he really was an action man, one of the paratroopers landing on D-Day and in the film he played his own commanding officer and in one scene is talking to another actor playing Richard himself.

Stringybark Creek - Ned Kelly - robber or terrorist or was he really a heroic freedom fighter

Last week ABC TV aired Tony Robinson's archaeology visit to Glenrowan and his amusing review of Ned Kelly.
One over the top enthusiast persisted that Ned was some kind of Irish freedom fighter and that a whole army of "revolutioners" were in the other pub at Glen Rowan waiting for the declaration of independence. When the police arrived Ned went off we were told to tell them to stand down. A very strange revolution.

We were told the old story of Ned being brutalised by the system and that was why he took to robbery and he was only defending himself against the brutal police.
That he was a Robin Hood character - (Tony did tell us that he robbed the poor as well as rich).
It was sad in the show to watch the policemen who was interviewed at the Stringybark Creek memorial having to listen to this nonsense of an heroic Ned

Natasha was born 1963 and I learnt from imdb that I first saw her as flower girl
in her father's The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968)

Strange as the first time I remember seeing Vanessa was just 2 years before in the incredibly brilliant

Perhaps one day when I see a load of Chili in a store D.I.Y. Hot Sauce - Bitten Blog - NYTimes.com  rinse the chiles, chop the stem off each (I use scissors), get rid of any bad spots, and drop them into the container of the machine. You can core them and clean out the seeds, but why bother? This stuff is going to be hot no matter what you do.  Pour in enough white vinegar to submerge the chiles, along with a handful of salt. Puree until quite smooth. Transfer the sauce to a pot and bring to a boil, stirring once or twice. Seriously: at no time during either of these steps do you want your nose or eyes anywhere near the fumes that waft from these vessels. Funnel the sauce into a clean jar or bottle and cool. Then cover with a cloth napkin and let the mixture sit at room temperature for three days, undisturbed. Carefully pour off all but a thin layer of the vinegar (which true enthusiasts save for another use) and refrigerate. The sauce keeps for months; you’ll know if it goes off when it starts to ferment and get sort of effervescent. But you’ll use it all before then.

Well I love my hearing aids and just this week I went and had new inserts
Inserts are the plastic tube from ear mould to the actual behind the ear aid. The plastic gets hard and dirty and you start to say "WHAT". new inserts and all is clear again. Around $40 and I am hearing well again.

I purchased mine from Beth and Greg and the others at M.A.C. Audiology Service are fantastic. Park in Eastwood medical centre and they are first building on left

It has phono plug which fits iPod - headset sockets etc etc. But the loop around my nect. Press buttons on my Hearing Aid for T Loop and wow the sound goes straight into my ears and LOUD. I can hear old movies and the rest of them can carry on chatting. If I turn on T Loop in both ears I cannot hear anything else

You'll feel like walking out of the cinema several times during the first 40 minutes of Australia, but try to stick it out. At first you suspect Baz Luhrmann and Nicole Kidman are having a huge lend of us, but as it proceeds, Australia becomes less like a parody. There are plenty of moments when you cringe in embarrassment at the clunky script, the hammy acting and the cheesy effects, but they are eventually outnumbered by moments that are quite engaging.

All That is so true. Especially within 10 minutes or so I was feeling like walking out. It seems like an animated film with real people. Funny camera angles - distorted features - very loud noises - very quirky camera tracking - camera seems to be hand held - ghastly. (Right through the film I thought the colours used were strange. It all seems so artificial. )

Then suddenly it slows down and actors can act and we see scenes instead of flashing around all over the place.

Best "joke" in this part of film: Lady Ashley looking out of side of truck sees Kangaroos bouncing along. "oh how lovely". BANG and blood running down windscreen. Shot Roo on roof of cab. You've got to be quick. The world i.e. England thinks Roo's are romantic - in Australia they are meat - a lot for sale in butchers nowadays not just pet shops.

Second best "joke": The film implies it is in tribute to "the Stolen Generations" - is it? - well just because it centres around a boy that the NT police want to take into care it might appear to be but the essence is the romance between Lady Ashley and Drover. Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) was much more into the Stolen generation. "Australia" seems to imply that the Stolen generation was only up in the Northern Territory. End of film has text that acknowledges some law change in NT in 1973 and Kevin saying Sorry in early 2008. What about the Australian referendum, 1967 (Aboriginals) that changed all Australia. I came here in 1966 and I was amazed that such a law change was needed. Most Australians were also appalled and the referendum was easily passed. It was good to see people celebrating the WIN on the 40th anniversary in 2007. "Australia" the movie did not mention 1967.

Much has been said about Nicole in the film. I thought she did well - the English lady coming to like the outback was well done. Her accent has been described as over the top - I thought it was hardly enough - a 1939 Lady Ashley would have had a much more upper crust accent. This film is most more entertaining than Cold Mountain (2003) in which I thought Nicole was mundane and Renée Zellweger was brilliant.

Jackman well he handles the part of Drover ok - just playing himself. Sort of part Bryan Brown would have played but I suppose 2o years too old. Instead Bryan is King Carney the cattle King I was never sure if he was really bad or was it just David Wenham who plays the ultimate villain Neil Fletcher very well. Did Northern Territorians strut around with big bottles of beer clamped to their lips. I thought they drank seven ounce glasses. Plot to me was confusing about whether King Carney had ordered the murders that Fletcher performed.

The aborigine actors were very good. King George was excellent ( David Gulpilil was also in Rabbit-Proof Fence. )

The climax is the Japanese bombing of Darwin. The film did show the panic afterwards with the military grabbing every vehicle so they could get out. Read about the Adelaide River stampede here The Battle for Australia - Australia under attack
and the damage shown in Darwin appears to be what happened

The strange thing was the gun fight with Japanese who land on "Mission Island" which WHO WE ARE blog says refers to Japanes Air Raid on Bathurst Island on 19 February 1942.
So the Japanese soldiers on the Island was a film invention - why lie about history. Reading about Bathurst and Melville I think the movie has invented their Mission Island just for the climatic finale.

Our friend Janene remarked on how fake the ships are in Darwin harbour. They sure do look strange -like distorted "paintings". Is everything digital nowadays. Models might have been better. What was all the money spent on?

Some good scenery - the cattle stampede is dramatic - was the gorge "real" or another digital creation.

One of the stories that emerges in email every Christmas is 

"From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. Whilst I think is that there is some truth in that story regarding the Christian meaning behind the song but the implication that it emerged as a tool for the Roman Catholic "underground" church is nonsense. The French for partridge is "perdrix" which is pronounced "pear dree". So the song is French or even comes from Greek. So it appears to have been around for a long time and in transferring between languages to have been become slightly confused.

I learnt the song when I was a kid and it was/is very popular at Christmas in England.

Now why would the English have so much love for a song that was used by Catholics in secret.

Nothing about it is particularly Catholic - I do not see the Pope or Mary mentioned - the principles it expounds appear to be Protestant beliefs. Perhaps it is really a Protestant song enforcing their Faith.

"Everyone dreams about seeing the Taj Mahal but very few Bangladeshis can make the trip because it's too expensive for them," he said.

BOILED CHOCOLATE CAKE with CHOCOLATE BUTTER ICING

2 Cups water
2.5 Cups sugar
1 Cup butter
4 Tablespoons cocoa
1 Level teaspoon bicarb/soda

Boil all the above for 5 minutes in large saucepan.
Allow to cool, then:-

ADD
3 Cups self raising flour
4 Beaten eggs
Mix well, pour into 31 x 25 cm. baking dish lined
with alfoil.
Bake 350 - 400 degrees fahrenheit for
35 - 40 minutes or until cooked.
Ice with chocolate icing

CHOCOLATE BUTTER ICING
4.5 oz. icing sugar
1 tbsp. melted butter
1 tbsp. cocoa
2 tbsps. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla essence

Put the icing sugar, cocoa, vanilla, and butter in a
mixing bowl.
Gradually add the milk, and stir
until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

I just do not know when I first heard of Sweeney Todd. There was also Maria Marten and the Red Barn. Melodramas from Victorian times that were supposed to be fact!
I am sure my parents would have understood Sweeney to be real. The famous police force the Scotland Yard Flying Squad is known as the Sweeney. Todd rhymes with Squad. In London rhyming slang you drop the rhyming word. Aussies says Captain Cook for a "look" Londoners say Butcher's (hook assumed).

I was never sure when Sweeney was supposed to have been running his barber shop - I supposed early 19th century. Well Peter tells me 1785. And that he was born 1756 and has a complete life story leading up to the murders and how the Bow Street runners responding to complaints about foul smells from St Dunstan's investigate and find out it is due to all the all the bodies.
Peter has a number killed like 160 - due to all the clothes found. But Sweeney is only charged with killing someone called Thornhill. And in the trial a doctor identifies Thornhill's bone - due to some breakage that the doctor treated and the way it has healed. The whole case against Sweeney in Peter's "research" sounds very vague and it sounds like a good defence would have squashed it.

Trouble is Peter never gives sources for his findings. Except he quotes a paragraph or so found in material from a Broadway play in 1940s. Hardly an actual source.

Peter starts the book with a coverage of legends from Middle Ages time frame about "demon barbers" and human flesh eating murderers - some in France and one called Swaney Bane in Scotland. How strange that Peter tells us the story is a legend and then treats the 1785 events as genuine history.

Peter Haining - Wikipedia whilst disparaging his work on Sweeney does acknowledge his research into literature and Sherlock Holmes.   Very strange that he should produce a book with so much research and resource quotes. without any resources for the his main story the actual existence of Sweeney  Todd.

iTunes, iPod, Mediamonkey and Music Library

We have ordered an iPod and I am trying to understand HOW recordings are indexed to put on the iPod. I am talking the Holy Bible (55 CDs), Christian Worship, Classical singing and orchestral and some plain old performances by artists.
It seems to me that iTunes is designed for Pop music fans. It calls tracks songs and the main groups are Album and Artist. The Audiobooks and Podcast seem to refer to downloads from iTunes. Even then speech is called songs.

It is like having a spreadsheet of the music list and you can quickly change tags.

I found from others that for iPod to keep a wanted sequnce you do need Disc numbers and track numbers. MM has a Tool that autofills track number when you have recordings in wanted sequence.

I will be adding more to this as I go - mostly I need the iPod to load and see perhaps end of week it arrives

It is good that the Pope recalls this disgusting event. It was a milestone in Nazi steps to their other horrors.

I like many Australians had never heard of Barack until this year.
At one primary I heard his victory speech and was concerned it seemed all about change whatever that was .
I was sort of hoping that Hillary would win as the first woman BUT then the first person of colour was perhaps even more needed.
Now it has happened I see clearly that it was needed - I rejoiced with the Civil Rights Marchers joy on election day.
But since that earlier speech I have heard nothing but a clear and profound message from Barack. People tell me all these bad things about him but if he is any of those then he is the biggest liar around and I am sure he is not.

King David - what has been found mentioning him

The question was which is the earliest proven Biblical person meaning an archaeologist has found a text that shows the Biblical person lived.

The Tel Dan Stele has

"7. riots and thousands of horsemen (or: horses). [I killed Jeho]ram son of [Ahab]

8. king of Israel, and [I] killed [Ahaz]iahu son of [Jehoram kin-]
9. g of the House of David. And I set [their towns into ruins and turned]"

So Ahab etc are given existence whereas it is argued that House of David does not mean there was real David. I think House of David is pretty clear evidence that these kings saw themselves descended from King David and we are talking some 150 years so that sounds like they would know what they were talking about.

I was always interested in events of 1917 and have a LP of Shostakovich's symphony

I think I always thought the suggestion that Anna Anderson was Anastasia was nonsense - how could the Bolsheviks have missed her in that fusillade of Mauser automatics and rifles in the cellar.

The 1956 film with Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner introduced me to the idea that some of the people who knew Anastasia did accept Anna as her. So I read more and it did seem so. Then recently I thought the whole business had been solved with a clear DNA test on the royal bodies found in Russia compared to Anna's DNA and that they were not related.

However now I hear there is doubt about that sample - it disappeared and then was found again - so was it actually from Anna. The sample tested might not have been Anna's so if not her then naturally it would not be Romanov. However apart from showing the sample's (whoever it belonged to) was not Romanov the tests did show that the sample was related to Franziska Schanzkowska - the Polish woman who was reputed to be Anna's real identity. I can accept that the sample was not Anna's but if she was was really Franziska and the sample was from Franziska then it seems proven that the sample was from Anna and the lack of links to Romanov's settles it. Unless there was a real conspiracy in 1994 when the DNA was proposed and a Franziska sample was switched - who got that sample - no that is too wild.

BUT what kind of test proved she was Franziska - mtDNA - and see the quote from

There is a lot on above site re why the Romanov DNA tests were not conclusive but as I said if the sample being actually Anna's is doubtful - it is the Franziska connection that makes it Anna's - however the statistics of DNA may cast doubt on that - but it could be considered a considerable statistic that the sample tested just happened by accident to be in the 4% of the population who share the same mtDNA as Franziska and her family.

More bizarre is that Franziska and Anna had different heights - Anna appeared in February 1920 and Franziska disappeared in March - the site above and the next one give a lot more detail on their differences.

The DNA testing is now under suspicion and looking at all the original evidence about her - marks on her body known to be like The Grand Duchess and scars consistent with the violence in the Ekaterinburg cellar including a bayonet wound in the foot all bring me back to thinking the impossible again.....

If Anna was Franziska and had been tutored to be Anastasia then the tutoring involved as far as I can make out knowing members of the Romanov on sight, knowing passwords and bank accounts (it seems the Tsar told his daughters) and very personal information about family events and people including that her uncle the Grand Duke of Hesse a German was visiting the Tsar in 1916 in WW1 which would have been treason and he always denied the visit but the Soviets published books which had records of this visit - this indicates the impossible visit did happen and that the so called impostor knew about it . As well as her having all this information she had to physically resemble the Duchess and have body markings like hers and on top of all that she had to learn Russian and English. And over what time frame did all this take place - a couple of weeks

Well then along came 31 May 2007 and ABC Sydney has a show on Grand Duchess Olga - the Aunt of Anastasia. Olga divorced the Prince they made her marry so that she could wed a commoner. She went to Denmark and later Canada and lived a lovely life. Everyone remembered her with great affection and you could just tell what a really caring person she was.
The show was quite plain she said Anna was not Anastasia. Wiki entry on Anna has a lot on Olga and you can see that she went to see Anna just in case she was Anastasia and found she was not. Her sister Xenia also was clear that she did not accept her either. The WHOLE family did not accept her. Anastasia's tutor did not accept. There were strange likeness and things that she knew. But it looks like seem of these are exaggerations.

Yup I think the jury has given a verdict......

Ending sort of peters out - Martin makes a 5 year plan with a girl that they will marry if nothing else happens (which girl? but that would be a spoiler ). Just seems to be saying life goes on and on.

One girl keeps a blog and emails are exchanged on stuff she says about Martin. A novel of just emails - very novel

This pub right on corner before you sweep round to Anzac bridge always seemed so forlorn to me.
I always wondered who drank there. But it looked to be well frequented.
Then 1992 it closed and has been sitting there looking like a dump and now a fire.

Perhaps that incredible wizened old lady who used to sell newspapers at the traffic lights spent her change there.

News just coming in this morning. An enormous load of drugs seized off a ship from Italy. So looks like Mafia involved. AFP now saying "kids in Australia are paying such a high price for ecstasy that encourages expensive shipments like this".

Customs CEO responded to "how do you feel" "this is what makes getting up in the morning worth while"

I agree well done guys - as an ex UK Customs officer I know just what this means to you all - big congratulations. You must have saved several young lifes finding this lot.
